How is copyediting different from proofreading?

Copyediting involves correcting grammar and syntax, improving the flow of the text, checking for logical structure, and establishing a consistent style. Proofreading is comparing an original manuscript with a typeset version to make sure that everything is correct, down to the last punctuation mark.

I have a memoir/novel/story that I want to self-publish. What can you do to help?

There are numerous services and small presses today that can help you get your book into print, but your chances of success are much greater if your manuscript is already in clear, readable prose. (The same is true if you plan to find an agent.) With my desktop publishing experience, I can also help with the design and layout of books and newsletters.

What are your rates?

Editing and proofreading services are both billed by the hour, although flat rates are available for short projects (such as improving a résumé). The editing rate is determined by the level of editing that is required (ranging from minor corrections to rewriting/restructuring).

Note: I specialize in taking a completed manuscript and putting it in publishable form. If you're looking for a ghostwriter, I recommend Alice McVeigh (www.alicemcveigh.com).
